But God……..

But wait… there’s more. The trip out to Seattle and Portland was incredible. We truly were in the FOG (Favor Of God). We couldn’t believe how the Turners had so richly blessed us not only with their generosity but with true koinonia like fellowship! As we were enjoying our time out west we never realized that the Lord was orchestrating this trip way before we even knew the timeliness of it. Dec 1,2016 to be exact. As we were coming to the end of our trip, Scott received a call from Barb that his Uncle Jerry was not doing well and taking a turn for the worse. That was Tues March 28, 2017. We were scheduled to fly back to Cleveland the next day so we had to make a quick decision on what to do. It was basically a no-brainer, we needed to get to Jerry as soon as possible. We had several of our friends, supporters, and family members praying for God to intervene on behalf of Jerry. The Lord provided a flight out the very next morning at 6:00 am and we would arrive in Phoenix AZ at 8:30 am. We got to Jerry about 9 and he was sitting up in bed but not looking so good. He was totally coherent and even in the state he was in, he was his usual sweet self. Scott said he had been praying for him not only for his health but for his spiritual condition as well. Jerry said ” I hope it’s not too late. ‘ And Scott reassured him that it wasn’t. Scott invited Jerry to call upon the name of Jesus and to ask Him to forgive him and be the Lord of his life and Jerry said, “Sure.” So Scott started to lead him in a prayer and as he did, Jerry wanted to say it in his own words, and Jerry asked Jesus to forgive him of his sins and to wash him clean. We were in awe of this moment!

You may not realize the enormity of this? We had been praying for this desperately as a family for years and years and even when Jerry had the surgery 2 years prior for his cancer, we thought he might be more open to hearing the Truth since life seemed so fragile. He did listen to us as we explained the Gospel to him, but he maintained that our beliefs were good for us but not for him.

Scott has always had a close relationship with Jerry. He was more like a father figure to him and as time went on we felt more and more discouraged that Jerry would ever believe. BUT GOD…..

But God had other plans. He was orchestrating through the Turners all the way back in the beginning of Dec and probably even earlier, that we would be out west at the precise time so that we could catch a flight quickly to get to Jerry in time. The amazing thing about this is that shortly after Jerry prayed, he started to go in and out of being coherent and that was pretty much the last time we really had a true conversation!

Of course this is a bittersweet time for us. Bitter for us because we love and miss him but so VERY sweet for Jerry!!! He is in the presence of Jesus forever! Jerry is free from worry, pain, regret. He is walking in freedom, joy, and he is going to live forever with his Lord.

Do you want to have the peace that Jerry has? Do you want to know where you will live forever? Most people only think about their life here on this earth and don’t realize that their eternity hangs in the balances. This IS the most important question that you’ll ever ask, so you should make sure you have the right answer. Please contact us if you have further questions about where you will spend eternity.

Skim’s Big Surprise in Seattle!!

Most of you know that Scott and I do almost everything together and so when we introduce ourselves we are known as Skim, Scott and Kim. It’s been kinda catchy and a lot of people refer to us that way now. 🙂

We were invited by our friends Jim Turner, (who co-authored the ‘discipleme’ workbooks with Scott) and his wife Tanya to come out, visit and to do a break out session for ‘discipleme’ at the NW MIN Conference held out in Seattle.  What an awesome time of fellowship as well as getting to meet some great people who are very interested in making disciples. Scott and Jim were able to share with people how to effectively disciple by using a brand new app that Jim and his family developed this past year! That was our BIG surprise! We are hoping that God will use this amazing tool for long term discipleship,.To provide the discipler a way to facilitate their time together, in an easy and efficient way.

Jim and Tanya also blessed us by showing us around Seattle and Portland and taking us to all the places to eat! It was a foodie lovers dream come true. They put us up in an awesome hotel accompanied with a welcome basket and a king size bed!!!! Do you even know what that was like for us to be able to stretch out in luxury??

The Lord seemed to be showering us with His favor and blessings over and over and showing us through His people how much He loves us! We are looking forward to see what the Lord will do! Please keep us in your prayers!

If you’d like to support our ministry, please go to Give and select Scott and Kim.

To Ohio, Florida, and Beyond!

So on August 19,2016 we arrived in Ohio from Drummond Island for Scott to turn around and fly out to Washington for a potential job. On the plane he met this guy Mike who is a small groups leader at his church and shared the 4 Fields Training on a barf bag! He also trained and prayed with several people in Washington as well.

Then he came back to Ohio for a 411 Training at the Plymouth Church of God. The people were awesome and hungry to know how to share the Gospel and their testimony effectively. Pastor Ben and his wife Cheryl were so sweet and they have such a passion for the Lord and for people. Please pray for this congregation as they are obedient to the call of Jesus to make disciples.

Scott taught on the 2nd lesson “Baptism” and demonstrated with John Carter how anyone can baptize a new believer.

After the trainings we went out into the Harvest and spoke to several people resulting in a potential Bible study with a veteran named Dennis.  And then afterwards we stopped at a restaurant and by divine appointment a young man that Pastor Ben was saying he wanted to reach out to “happened” to be there and Pastor Ben got to pray with him. How precious is that?

Scott also met with John Carter and had an update on what God has been doing.

Scott also got invited to speak at Mansfield, Ohio Reformatory to a group of men there. He spoke on growing up with anger and Scott’s “his story” as well as the Gospel. Interestingly enough several inmates came up to him and thanked him for coming and sharing.

We also planned on going down to Florida so that Scott could officiate a wedding of a couple that we had discipled for over a year. Right before we came down a dear friend of the family asked Scott to officiate her mom’s Celebration of Life which we were so thankful we could do. Seeing our girls and the grandkids have been awesome as well as touching base with our friends.

Agustin Martin, our fellow missionary is working with Scott on planning the monthly support team. This is some of the behind the scenes work that needs to be done when we are not in the Harvest or training people.

So many things have happened that have been so amazing and that we’ve been able to be a part of. We just heard back from the group that we started in Drummond Island that they are continuing to meet and that they are caring for each other as well as encouraging each other to share the Gospel!! This is so exciting for us! To see the work continuing in our absence! We are realizing that God is opening so many doors for us and it’s getting harder for Scott to work a traditional job . For the first time in our ministry we are seeing that the Lord is providing through people on our team sponsoring us. This is definitely a HUGE step of faith. We have never done that because we have always had the “self sufficient” mindset. But watching the way the Lord has worked lately we are more and more amazed how provision is being given to us. It’s also looking like we are going to the Dominican in the winter so that should be an unbelievable experience! The Lord will really be stretching us in many different ways. Please pray that we will be prepared for such a great opportunity!

If you would like to be a MONTHLY supporter please let us know so that we can talk with you and explain all that the Lord is doing and how you can be a part of it.

Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow From Our Island Of Oasis!

It is so hard to believe that we are in our last week of staying on Drummond Island! Time has flown by so quickly! We have been so very blessed by this whole experience of trusting in God and His best because this was definitely a demonstration of His extravagant generosity! Scott got a job out in Spokane, Washington for a couple of days that might turn into something big so please be praying for us.

So many amazing things have been placed at our feet! We have been immersed in blessing after blessing from our Father who is the Giver of every good gift! So many wonderful, kind, fun people on this island have touched our hearts, but while being on this island, the thing that has become the most precious prize for us is our love for Him has been restored to where it needed to be. JESUS, the Author and Finisher of our faith, the object of our affection and attention, has been rightfully placed to being our first Love instead of the ministry or even us being on the mission!  We have been given this gift of staying in this beautiful cabin without any strings attached and without any hindrances. We can just BE. And not only just be, but be here with our Beautiful Lover and Savior in a perfect setting!!! This truly was a time of refreshment; literally an island of oasis for us.

Here is a final taste of what we experienced on the first quarter of our journey here on Drummond Island.

We volunteered to be greeters at this beautiful house on a Home Show on the island! Because of this the Lord opened the opportunity for us to meet a lot of great people including the neighbors that invited us on their boat and for a motorcycle ride.

We went on a ride with our neighbors that we met, Pat and Kathy! It was absolutely beautiful!

They showed us some of the landmarks! This is Whitefish Bay.

They also included us on their sunset cruise and we got to meet Mike and Johna.

Some beautiful barns that we saw on our ride.

Kim made Ray who works at the golf course and Pam the librarian, some fried rice. The Fried Rice ministry is one of our entry strategies. 🙂

We met Kenny and Daniel who are about to embark on a 30 day “Prayer Walk” along the U.P. Daniel prayed a blessing over us and as he did he felt that God was using us to spread His Hope and he said like a dandelion we would have seeds spreading everywhere even if we couldn’t see it. He said that we would have a fruitful harvest. Praise Him!!!

Scott is teaching on the 4 Fields.

Ruth is practicing the Gospeling tool of 3 Circles and she did awesome!!

Here Scott is sharing with Karin how to Oikos map.

Now Karin is mapping out her Oikos. This is her cute puppy Aggie!

As we continue on this journey would you continue to pray for our close intimacy with the Lord? That it would not be set to the side for other “good” things but that we would be like Mary who chose the “better thing” which was to simply sit at Jesus’ feet. Pray for the seeds that have been planted here on Drummond that they would be nurtured and tended to and grow. Pray for a FRUITFUL harvest and that more laborers would be sent here and then be put on mission to go throughout and from this island.

God blessed us with wild raspberries and apples fresh off of a tree! This is the kind of harvest we dream of that produces good fruit!

Which one describes you? JOY or YOJ?

This picture is a little blurry, but it was taken by a young man Charles who went on a missionary trip to Ethiopia.  It depicts the Last Supper of Jesus but the people shown here are from all nations showing that Jesus is calling everyone from all backgrounds. Charles also reminded us that in order to fulfill this mission of sharing Jesus with everyone, we need to operate in JOY. JOY is the acronym for Jesus first, others second, and yourself last. And so as we are calling the nations to come to know Jesus we need to exhibit true JOY, not YOJ. 🙂 YOJ is the opposite of JOY! We are seeing the YOJ acronym of 2 Tim 3:2 more and more nowadays “For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred.” We’ve heard it said that the capital Y represents the unholy trinity of me, myself, and I. But seriously, would you say that your life exhibits JOY? Are you truly loving Jesus first and then others second? It was definitely a great reminder for us as we are on this journey of sharing Jesus with everyone, that in order for us to be effective we need to always showcase Christ first and have Him the focal point of our love and then to show love to others.  This seems to be crucial in light of all the killings and strife that we are seeing in today’s headlines. James 4:1 says, “What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you?” We need to really look at what Jesus did. He only did what He saw the Father doing. He truly loved people right where there were at. He was a true servant as it talks about in Philippians 2:1-11.

Thoughts for the week:

Remember if you are a follower of Christ, you need to live out JOY and that He has given you a very important mission which is to share His Good News with everyone. 🙂

Believer when you step out of your bed today, remember you are entering the “Mission Field” and do it with JOY!

God Is Working Behind the Scenes

Why are we always surprised when God does things that are meaningful and significant in our lives? We have a tendency to think He would do it for so and so but not for us, or are we the only ones that think this way? 🙂 This incredible journey we are on has allowed us to watch Him work in the background as well as right in front of us, orchestrating and providing in ways we could never have concocted.

Depending on Him for our daily bread when it comes to the basics of life such as food, and shelter, has been amazing to see not only that He DOES provide but HOW He does it. A beautiful facet of His love and care is that so far, all of our financial support has been put on people’s hearts, without us even asking for it. For now this is how the Father is providing for us and there is no better place for us to be than in the center of His will. Yes, we don’t have a house, or the things that went into the house or a 9-5 job with benefits or retirement, or any other thing that would provide us a sense of “security”, but what we do have is so comforting, knowing that we are with our Abba Father, doing what He has asked us to do and no matter what, it’s gonna be Ok because He will take care of everything. Believe us when we say at one point that would have scared the crap out of us!

There is a saying that resonates from our Calvary Chapel days in Jupiter by our loved Pastor Dan who used to always say, “Where God guides, God provides.” And although, that’s kind of a catchy saying, especially back then when we really didn’t have to give up anything, it has never rang more true than it does now. He will provide, He just does! We are literally living out Matt. 6:31-33. Not just reading the passage and agreeing that it sounds great but we are actually having to put our trust in Him to give us what we need!

As He continues to arrange divine appointments, we continue to live in His provision in all aspects of life. Recently in His omniscience, He has also provided us with some very diverse people along this journey that have encouraged us greatly. They have caused us to rethink our motives and our strategies for sharing the Gospel. They have encouraged us to have a new passion and excitement for Him. Some have endured hardships and even been burned by the church badly but continue to press on with joy. There have been those along our path that have shown us what integrity looks like and are greatly respected by others, causing us to want to lead the same way. There are still others that have been so enthusiastic with how we are sharing the Gospel, that they are rapidly obedient and have immediately shared Jesus to the broken. You do not know how much this encourages us!!

It’s amazing when you allow the Lord to take the lead and play the main role in the script of life and we remain in the background as the “extras”  how the “epicness” of the story unfolds even in the minute details. Sometimes those are the most incredible and miraculous moments! We’ve heard it said, “If you are the main character in your play of life, than your stage is too small.” So we are learning to really let God do what He does and for us to come along side Him. Not in front and not lagging behind but in lock-step with His plan and purpose. We must decrease so that He can increase. (John 3:30)

Thoughts for this week:

What are some things that He has surprised you with by His care and concern for you that you can thank Him right now? What are some areas that you can trust Him by giving total authority to Jesus and let Him lead you? How can you give Him glory as you decrease so that He will increase?

Good Times with Local Believers!

We have been having a great time getting to know the local believers here on Drummond Island! We really believe that one of the main things that God wants us to do is to strengthen and encourage local Christians. We have been encouraged as well and challenged in many different ways. Acts 14:22

We have been meeting with Pastor Scott Danforth of Lighthouse Christian Church weekly and what a fun time we are having with him.

A Thurs night group of fellowship.

We also visited the Lutheran Church and the Reverend explained the Gospel in a very clear and concise way.

After the service at the Lutheran Church they had a guest speaker who had gone on a missions trip to Ethiopia and he shared his stories that were very encouraging.

At the Lutheran Church we got to meet this couple who works in the prisons and shares the Good News to the inmates there. We got to read one of the testimonies of how it changed this one man’s life on the picture posted behind them.

This is at the local Baptist Church and we got to enjoy the pastor preach a great word about sharing your testimony with others to point them to Jesus!

The amazing thing we are finding is that God is using people in all different ways and with different backgrounds and we get to be a part of His great big story! Thank you so much for your prayers and support! We could not do this without you all!!

The Unexpected Blessing by being on Drummond Island.

We are settling back into the routine of our life here on the island. We have posted a schedule on the wall so that we can make sure that we are capturing our time and spending it wisely. And yes, we are still having our weekly administration meeting. 🙂 So many people have questioned how beneficial it really is, but we have found it to be VERY helpful and it has prevented us from getting into many “lively conversations”. 🙂

We are sensing that the Lord has truly blessed us by bringing us to Drummond for many different reasons, the obvious is to have a place to lay our heads which He has orchestrated so richly and beautifully. But even past our superficial needs He is showing us that we needed this time to really focus on our relationship with one another and deal with things within our marriage that have been put to the side for many years, even going back to the beginning of our relationship.

We have found that marriage is truly a picture of the Gospel to the world, so more than ever, we are realizing that we need to make sure ours is solid. After all that is our main purpose now; to share the Good News with everyone, so it’s kind of important that our marriage is accurately depicting this. Thankfully we are in a place in our relationship where fierce emotions and tears can erupt out of nowhere, we are mature enough and love each other enough to be able to “hash things out” in a way that is not damaging to the other person. Believe us when we say that has not always been the case!

The Lord has definitely used our marriage to stretch us in areas we did NOT want to be flexible. He has taught us to ENDURE with each other even when we felt the other person was intolerable! We’ve always thought the word endure, meant to “put up with each other”, with a begrudging kind of attitude, but now for the first time we are learning “a more excellent way.” (1 Cor 12:31-13:1) God is “changing our mind” (metanoia) on how we conduct ourselves. This “more excellent way” is actually LOVING someone enough to PAUSE and ask the Lord to give you incite into the issue. When He gives you the wisdom then you can SPEAK LIFE into a person even when you don’t have an inkling as to what or why they are doing something.  It’s taking the time to really UNDERSTAND them even when you are hurt, by choosing to love them faithfully even when you don’t believe you have the capacity or the energy for it. Your motive is because you would rather be like Jesus than being right.

For example, there was a time in our communication where a statement like this would be said, “You never spend time with me!”(This puts the other person on the defensive) Now we are learning to speak, using words of life such as, “I would like to spend more time with you because I enjoy you. Can we make a plan on how we can do that?” Wow! What a simple principle and it may seem so “Elementary my Dear Watsonish”, but so unbelievably revolutionary to our marriage!!!  Instead of approaching things with a negative slant we are learning to operate from a positive standpoint. This “more excellent way” still deals with the matter, without sweeping it under the rug, but handles it with truth AND love and with the idea of restoring the relationship. (Eph 4:15)

This whole idea of “changing our mind” in how we operate is coinciding strangely enough with our Bible study in the book of Acts, which is another topic of discussion that we will be possibly addressing in the future.  We keep seeing throughout the Scripture, how God’s love causes people to have a “change of mind” towards Him.  We are personally experiencing a “changing of our mind” not only towards the Lord but to each other. We are no longer just intellectually assenting to what the Bible tells us, but we are trying to follow what it says and finding LOVE should always be central.

Over time He has caused us to learn to forgive and move on and not hold a record of wrong. In His sovereignty, He put us together knowing that we were pretty much opposites in the way we communicate. Historically this caused friction with little change or growth. Through the years He has taught us how to speak to one another with wisdom and understanding.  After being married for almost 23 years, we have found that if you allow the Lord to use your marriage to sanctify yourself and not fight against it, then He can transform you more and more into the image of His Son Jesus and you can truly display to the world what is an accurate depiction of who Jesus is and His bride.

Being here on Drummond Island has provided a place for us not only to minister to those around us, but for us to be ministered to by the Lord and to work things out between us that we haven’t had the time to do up till now. This is the HUGE, AND UNEXPECTED BLESSING and we are very aware that it is from the Lord. A wise pastor/friend of Scott’s said when he was praying over him that he believed that being here on Drummond Island would be a time for us and a time of refreshment. Those words have become prophetically true. We are so thankful that God is all-knowing and He knew exactly what we needed and when we needed it.

Thoughts for this week:

If you have found yourself in a place where your marriage needs help. Humble yourself before the Lord and He will exalt you. (1 Peter 5:6 and James 4:10) Whatever the issue is, the Lord can and will handle it the way only He can. Just be ready to have a “metanoia” (changing of your mind) and be willing to obey. Usually the thing the Lord asks you to do, is the harder thing. Are you willing to go that far to DO the harder thing? Ask the Lord for strength and for wisdom on how to love your spouse so that you can display the Gospel to those around you with power and genuineness.  Remember it was His LOVE that covered a multitude of your sins. Let us love the way Jesus did and love one another deeply. (1 Peter 4:8)

Little Is Much When God Is In It- Hymn by Kittie L. Suffield 1924

Hymn: Little Is Much When God Is In It

VS 1:In the harvest field now ripened
There’s a work for all to do;
Hark! the voice of God is calling
To the harvest calling you.

Little is much when God is in it!
Labor not for wealth or fame.
There’s a crown—and you can win it,
If you go in Jesus’ Name.

VS 2: In the mad rush of the broad way,
In the hurry and the strife,
Tell of Jesus’ love and mercy,
Give to them the Word of Life.

VS 3: Does the place you’re called to labor
Seem too small and little known?
It is great if God is in it,
And He’ll not forget His own.

VS 4: Are you laid aside from service,
Body worn from toil and care?
You can still be in the battle,
In the sacred place of prayer.

VS 5: When the conflict here is ended
And our race on earth is run,
He will say, if we are faithful,
“Welcome home, My child—well done!”

This was a hymn that was sung at a local church on Drummond Island that we had never heard before, but the words really spoke to us, especially because of the season in life that we are in. Isn’t it amazing that this woman’s words of encouragement to the believer still rings on almost a century later?

Which verse of this hymn do you identify with? Is the Lord calling you to go into the harvest? Are you listening and obeying to that call? Have you been caught up in the cares of this life or are you telling people throughout your busy day of the Hope that is in you? (1 Peter 3:15) Maybe you feel discouraged because you don’t see God using you in mighty and glorious ways? Zechariah 4:10 reminds us, “ Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord REJOICES to see the work begin.” Think of that! The Lord is glad over small beginnings. It doesn’t matter if anyone knows what work you are doing for the Him, because He does! Or maybe you have been serving the Lord a long time and you are tired and worn out, but remember, as it says in Hebrews 6:10, “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work and the love you have shown Him as you have helped His people and continue to help them.”

Thoughts for this week:

No matter what point you are in your walk with the Lord, He is the source. Without Him we can do nothing in our own strength and if we try to operate in our own power, we will find ourselves “Body worn from toil and care.” Believer, fix your eyes on Jesus and run your race that the Lord has put before you, with endurance and love for the One who is waiting at the finish line!  Christian can you see Him cheering you on? Can you picture Him with His arms stretched out to you? How wonderful that day will be when Jesus will say to us ‘if we are faithful, “Welcome Home, My child- well done!” That is the ultimate goal for the Casteels to run victoriously and help as many people along the way to Jesus!  We pray that this is your hearts cry as well.

Remember the story of the boy with the 5 loaves and 2 fish. What little he had, he allowed Jesus to use it for His glory and to make His name famous. A little is much when God is in it!!!

It’s the Little Things in Life!

So since being on the island we have been taking in all the “little things” of life. For instance, the perfect weather of 75 for the high and 59-60 for the low. We definitely feel sorry for our Florida       fr-amily. 🙂 Being able to see the stars vividly at night because of zero air pollution is amazing and it doesn’t get dark till 10:30 pm! We’ve had to get used to that one for sure, but that has definitely given us more time to do things!  Seeing a mama osprey hovering over her nest of babies. Picking wild strawberries randomly growing along the driveway and eating them in yogurt. Eating at restaurants together and meeting the locals. Meeting new brothers and sisters in Christ and having a Bible study in pure freedom without any fear of persecution. And the list goes on and on.

We are trying not to miss these “little things” and being very thankful to God for them. What in your life are the “little things” that the Lord has rained blessing on you? Have you thanked Him recently? Remember to live out Ephesians 5:20 “always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Cute little authentic Mexican restaurant called “Esther’s”   What a great place to have a Bible study!

20160710_130628   20160710_132503

This was a very eclectic place to eat. It had a little bit of everything! It had a Deli, ice cream, all kinds of snacks, trinkets, model train paraphernalia, a walk-in cooler with all kinds of different drinks etc… You name it! They had it! We got to meet with some locals and ended up finding out that everyone was from Ohio! It was like a mini family reunion! 🙂

Something that we might have missed while we were zooming past

on our motorcycle, but these were the BIGGEST dandelions we have ever seen!

Kim took a pic with one just to get a perspective of how big it really was. 🙂

Whenever we see dandelions it reminds us of our beloved niece Christina because she always lived for the moment! You literally never knew what she was gonna do next! Sometimes that was bad and sometimes that was good. 🙂  “Life Is Not Measured By the Number of Breaths We Take, But By the Moments That Take Our Breath Away.” This quote is such a great reminder that we need to make every moment special, whether big or small, and live life to it’s fullest for the glory of God!
